Boys and Girls Club offers homework help through Raise the Grade

The Battlefords Boys and Girls Club is offering afterschool homework help for youth Grades 9 to 12, through their Raise the Grade Program.

In addition to homework and study help, Raise the Grade also offers students ages 14 to 18 assistance crafting their resume, increasing their digital literacy, and planning for post-secondary education or future job opportunities, while also having a chance to interact with peers.

This is the first year Raise the Grade is being offered in the Battlefords community. The program runs two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m., until the end of June.

Due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions, the Boys and Girls club has secured a secondary location in addition to their main-site, to allow for all interested youth to take part. Additionally, there is also a virtual option available, for those more comfortable taking the program from the comfort of home, via Zoom.

Executive director with the Boys and Girls Club, Nicole Combres said it’s all about giving youth the resources needed to thrive in their education, especially as the opportunity for in-person learning has been largely limited due to the ongoing pandemic.

“Many of our members are doing schooling online right now, and it can be really difficult when they don’t have someone in-person helping them through their school work,” she said. “That connection and extra support is really instrumental, so this offers students a chance to have someone in-person, or one-on-one virtually, give them that extra assistance with homework help.”

The club will also be offering a limited time incentive for youth in the community to join, prior to March 1. Those who sign up before the beginning of March and attend the two weekly sessions until the end of June, will be offered a free laptop on a first-come first-serve basis.

Combres said she encourages students in the community to try Raise the Grade, to take their education to the next level, and take advantage of the interactive aspect available through the service.

“We’re just hoping this program can give youth ages 14 to 18 a safe place to go for homework help, [and] a snack, some supper and just some interaction with peers, with our staff and with their mentors in a way they otherwise may not be able to,” she said.

Raise the Grade is a national program, implemented at a number of Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada. To register for the Raise the Grade Program, those interested can call the local Boys and Girls Club, or visit their website.
