Wintertainment to go ahead this month but with different look

The City of North Battleford is providing an opportunity for residents to get out and have some fun this month, over the upcoming February break.

Wintertainment is an annual tradition in the community, which gives families a chance to take part in a week chalked-full of entertainment and activities from Feb. 15-20.

Community programmer with the city, Siobhan Gormley said the week is all about making the most of the winter season, and having some fun in the community.

“We hold this event every year during the February school break, and we try to have something for everyone,” she said. “There are always a variety of activities going on for all ages, so people can pick and choose what they do and hopefully have a chance to get outside most days.”

Gormley said while the wintertainment festivities have had to be adjusted this year due to the ongoing pandemic, the city felt it was still as important as ever to offer a fun and safe outlet for families, during this time.

“The wintertainment will look a little bit different this year, as we will be running smaller groups due to the COVID restrictions and all COVID guidelines will be followed for the activities, but we will still have some indoor activities and lots of outdoor activities to take part in,” she said.

The week will start Monday with Family Day at the Credit Union CUplex NationsWEST Field House for much of the afternoon. Public swimming at the Co-op Aquatic Centre will also be offered through much of the day.

Tuesday will feature free public skating at the Don Ross Arena, followed by socially-distanced winter ice games hosted by Lamarr Oksasikewiyin, and a visual snow carving display by Patricia Leguen.

Wednesday, ages eight and up are invited to take part in an animal finger puppets craft at the Don Ross Centre craft room, along with more free public skating.

Thursday there will be a toboggan hill contest, a craft making animal suncatchers, and an outdoor glow skate to cap off the evening, where participants are encouraged to dress in neon colours to light up the night.

Friday eco-educator, Elizabeth Bekolay will take participants on a guided tour of Finlayson Island teaching them about how animals use snow to survive. There will then also be a ‘little critter bookmarks’ craft available at the Don Ross craft room.

The week will conclude with a pop-up art cards craft at the Don Ross Craft Room, Saturday afternoon.
