Ice in Melfort

Council waiting for next government announcement before making decision on ice in Melfort

Ice will remain in Melfort’s Northern Lights Palace for the time being.

Originally, council was set to vote on Monday, Feb. 1 at their regular meeting whether to remove the ice beginning on Feb. 15. However, there was a delegation from the Melfort Mustangs as they were asking for council to hold off on voting to remove the ice.

The team is hoping to bring back some players to begin practicing in hopes of a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season.

As a result, council did not vote on keeping the ice in or removing it at Monday’s meeting and Facilities Manager Leonard Whitney told northeastNOW in an email that council has decided to wait on the next announcement from the provincial government on or before Feb. 19. That’s the date the current public health guidelines expire.

The Mustangs proposal didn’t just include the team practicing, but also bringing together other user groups including Melfort Minor Hockey with the idea of some sort of drills and skills taking place to keep revenue coming into the city from the palace.

Whitney also told northeastNOW he along with the city clerk met with user groups on Friday.
