Table Mountain closed Friday through Sunday due to extreme cold

Table Mountain has announced they will be closed Friday through Sunday (Feb. 5-7) this weekend, due to extreme cold conditions.

North Battleford and area are currently under an extreme cold warning, expected to continue throughout the weekend, with a wind chill in the vicinity of -40 C Friday, -43 C Saturday and -30 C expected for Sunday.

General Manager of Table Mountain, Lawrence Blouin said having to close temporarily while a cold spike passes is nothing new for the popular ski locale, and rather, just part of life during wintertime in Saskatchewan.

“Every year we have a stretch like this,” he said. “Sometimes it happens earlier, sometimes it happens later, but every year there are some days we’re shut down due to cold temperatures. It’s nothing new, and it’s going to be that way for as long as there’s skiers around.”

Table Mountain will reopen to the public Friday, Feb. 12, and remain open the entire week of the February break, right through to Sunday, Feb. 21, barring any further severe cold snaps.

The winter break will be the first full week the ski hill is operational this year. The skiing/snowboarding season got off to a late start this year due to prior restrictions related to the ongoing pandemic. Since initially re-opening for the season in early January, Table Mountain has been open just three days a week, Friday through Sunday.

Blouin said they hope for a return to more mild temperatures ahead of next week, to allow for families to come out and enjoy the week off school with some time on the hill.

“Hopefully we can get our cold snap cleaned up here this weekend and have a return to some nice weather for the rest of the winter,” Blouin said. “We’re looking forward to reopening next weekend, and for the week [of the 15-19] when the kids are off school.”
