City of Meadow Lake approves SGI traffic study

Feb 9, 2021 | 5:18 PM

The City of Meadow Lake has given SGI the green light to conduct a traffic safety study within the city.

The project will oversee 10 intersections and their traffic corridors to determine their safety. The goal of the review is to provide SGI and the City of Meadow Lake with insight and recommendations to improve traffic flow.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said the project was first brought to the council’s attention last year, but council decided to pass on the study at the time to allocate spending to higher priority areas.

“It was in our budget discussions last fall, but with COVID and constraints on budget stuff, we backed away from it at that point. SGI came to us offering some financial assistance to move forward with the traffic study,” Seymour said.

With the project approved in the 2021 budget, SGI will cover the costs of the $40,000 traffic scope study. While the study will offer recommendations in areas of improvement, it will not require immediate additional spending from the city after the findings have been revealed. Once the study has been completed, any recommendations offered to the city are permitted to be included in future budgeting, planning, and grant applications.

Some residents expressed their concerns with the current system, Seymour said. The study will help officials understand what traffic patterns and practices would optimize safety and efficiency.

“There have been concerns at certain times of the day. For example, at nine o’clock, noon and five o’clock, getting across the highway does get quite busy,” Seymour said. “We’re just looking at ways to alleviate the wait times, primarily by keeping the safety of everyone in mind.”

Council will be looking to implement suggestions from the study based on spending in the upcoming budgets, Seymour said.

At the time of publishing, a timeline for the project has not been announced.
