Community group offers support to those affected by Esso fire

Following the devastating fire at the local Esso service station in Battleford late last month, a group of community members have rallied around the business to show their support.

Several members of the local community who host ‘Welcome to the Battlefords’ came together to deliver care packages made up of food and essentials to the families affected by the fire.

Among those heading up the initiative was office manager of the Discovery Co-op, Sunny Song. It was Song’s idea to reach out to her employer as well and offer a chance to partner with the friend group to help with building the care packages.

The Co-op donated the bags and a gift card for each family. It was something marketing and communications manager, Leanne Ducommun, said they could not have been more pleased to do.

“The Battleford Esso is a part of our community just as every business plays a real part in this community. It’s important that we look after one another, more so now than ever,” she said. “That connection is so important, so we just wanted to do our little part to help support our fellow community members.”

Ducommun said the organization was happy to get involved and is proud of Song for the work and kindness of her and her friends to support the families affected.

“Our mission statement is ‘We Care,’ so this is something [we hope] is instilled in our team members,” she said. “We are very proud of Sunny for taking that initiative and coming to us and wanting to have the Co-op partner with them in this initiative. We’re very thankful for that.”
