WDM to launch virtual video program on Violet McNaughton

North Battleford’s Western Development Museum (WDM) is hosting a new video program about Saskatchewan’s Violet McNaughton, a leader in the women’s rights movement in Canada in the first half of the 20th Century.

Violet’s Saskatchewan – Violet McNaughton and early women’s rights on the prairies tells who McNaughton was and her role in Saskatchewan’s story, while also examining the larger history of the issues that faced women during the time.

Education and public programming assistant with the WDM, Amber Parker, said the virtual program is valuable because it highlights the lasting impact McNaughton has had on life in the province for all, even those who may not have even heard of her in the past.

“Violet was the face of the women’s campaign for the right to vote about 100 years ago and also did a lot to advocate for gender equality in the province,” Parker said. “Woman’s stories have historically not always been told, or as focused on, so I think it’s really important to recognize her work and what she was able to do.”

Parker said depending on the success of Violet’s Saskatchewan, the virtual program series is something the WDM would like to potentially continue to present moving forward.

“We’ve been thinking about [maybe doing more] in the future, as I think it provides real value kind of profiling those people who have really changed Saskatchewan and made it what it is today,” she said.

Violet’s Saskatchewan is an hour-long video program that will be available through the Western Development Museum website, March 1-15. To preregister to receive the video next month, residents can visit the WDM website.
