Around 700 customers affected by two power outages in Carrot River and surrounding area

Residents in the Carrot River, Zenon Park and Arborfield areas have been dealing with some power issues over the last day or so.

Beginning on Feb. 11, an outage in the area was reported around 9 a.m. and was due to some damage at the Zenon Park substation. Crews brought in a mobile substation to restore power for the time being as repairs weren’t able to be done in enough time due to the weather and other factors.

Then early on the morning of Feb. 12, crews were made aware around 4:45 a.m. of another outage due to damages at the mobile substation.

“We have, since then, managed to restore power to all 700 affected customers through some switching; diverting power from other areas to the affected area,” said Scott McGregor, SaskPower spokesperson.

Crews continue to investigate the outage and the cause. McGregor said they are unsure if the cold weather was the main factor in the outage but said that’s possible. However, it could be other factors including aging infrastructure or wildlife.

McGregor added that while crews work to fix the damage at the substation, the diverted power will remain and they’re asking residents to do their part in making sure no other outages occur. If possible, SaskPower customers in the area are being asked to reduce their energy consumption, McGregor said.

Large appliances can be a major help in reducing power. McGregor said fully loading the washer, not over drying clothes and keeping the oven closed while cooking food are all ways to reduce power usage. Smaller ideas include turning off lights when not in a room, using a smart thermostat to adjust the heat while sleeping and using a block heater timer for your car.

“Just using things as efficiently as possible,” McGregor said.

McGregor is not expecting any other outages at this time, and he thanked the residents of the area for their patience. Outages during the cold weather can be frustrating.

In total, residents were without power for around eight hours over the 24 hour stretch.
