City of Melfort offering staycation destination for February break

Feb 15, 2021 | 9:10 AM

The February break will look a bit different this year, but the City of Melfort is offering many COVID-19 and family-friendly activities.

The Play Melfort staycation destination is at the Kerry Vickar Centre (KVC) with gym rentals, two island photo ops, arts, and more.

Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall said the Northern Lights Palace is the place to be at the end of the week, with a glow skate taking place on Friday.

“Admission is by donation to KidSport, we have four skating spots open between 5 and 9 p.m.,” Marshall said.

Initially, there were just two glow skate time slots but those filled rather quickly according to Marshall so they added two more.

Pre-registration is required for all activities and there will be a limited number of spots available for each activity to comply with public health guidelines currently in place. Registration is online at melfort.ca.

Families can also rent half of the gymnasium at the KVC for $20.00 for six people for an hour. Masks are a requirement.

“There are a ton of outdoor activities to take part in as well around the city,” Marshall said. “We have the snow sculptures at the KVC to check out as well or come grab some outback skis and give those a try.”

A learn-to-make-a snow-sculpture clinic that was planned for last weekend has been postponed to this Saturday due to the extreme cold warning that was in place. The forecast looks to warm-up over the course of the February break that runs until Feb. 21.

There are also multiple outdoor rinks around the city and the crokicurl rink at Memorial Garden that are open.
