There are about two dozen positive cases of the coronavirus in the tri-communities as of Feb. 16.

The most cases currently are on-reserve with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band sitting at 14 active cases. There are another seven active cases in La Ronge and less than or equal to five cases in Air Ronge. For confidentiality, case numbers are reported as less than or equal to five if case numbers are this low.

There has been a total of 443 cases in the tri-communities with the band at 242, La Ronge at 167 and Air Ronge at 34.

Effective Feb. 17, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is now recommending anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to get tested immediately.

“Previously, the SHA advised anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to wait 48 hours before getting tested to minimize the chance of a false-negative test result, however, with new guidance from the European Centre for Disease Control this rule has changed,” a weekly update from the Northern Population Health Unit states.

The release notes the SHA advises anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, even if they are mild, to get tested as soon as possible. That allows contact tracing to begin more timely to help stop the spread of positive COVID-19 cases.

“Anyone who tests negative is asked to be retested 48 hours after their first test if their symptoms persist,” the release states. “Getting tested and knowing your status is an important step to protecting yourself and others against COVID-19.”
