Big Brothers Big Sisters of Humboldt celebrating successful fundraising event

Feb 25, 2021 | 11:37 AM

Over $17,000 was raised in the 2021 edition of Bowl for Kids Sake in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Humboldt and area.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization still brought in the same amount of funds as a typical year.

Program coordinator Jodie Hergott told northeastNOW they reduced their goal with it being such a difficult year.

“We had businesses that could not bowl but they passed around the pledge sheet and contributed in a big way,” Hergott said.

A virtual option was available this year which about half of the participants utilized. The other option was to participate in-person at Kemway Lanes in Humboldt with restrictions and protocols in place for safety purposes.

“The virtual bowling app made it possible to participate anywhere whether it be your couch, your desk and any device could handle the app,” Hergott said. “We wanted to give our supporters options this year as it is a unique situation right now.”

New for this year as well was having extra classes in local schools participating with the app, and with help from Humboldt Coop, party boxes were available for the classes on the Friday before the February break.

“We had seven classes bowling for kids sake this year and it was very exciting,” Hergott said. “Those kids were amazing when it came to the fundraising.”

Hergott gave an extra nod of appreciation to the support from the Muenster school who had four classes participating.

“They raised over $7,700, just themselves, and they bowled in their classroom and had a great time with it,” Hergott said. “We had classes on board at Humboldt Public School and St. Augustine in town.”

The mayor of Humboldt, Michael Behiel also took in some bowling for the event.

The theme for this year’s event was circus and costumes such as fortune tellers, strongman, elephants, lions, and ring masters were in attendance.

Prizes for best dressed are to be awarded on Friday.

All of the funds raised through Bowl For Kids Sake go to the organization’s programming throughout the year.

“We can continue to make matches in the community, our wait list has grown to about 20 kids now so we are always looking for more mentors,” Hergott said. “We have 13 matches in the community that we support on a regular basis.”

The aim for BBBS is to give kids a chance to realize their full potential.

BBBS is looking down the road to summer when they hope to host their Diva for a Day ladies charity golf scramble that was postponed last year to abide by public health guidelines.

The golf scramble is typically held the second weekend of June.

“It very much is a big part of our budgeting so we are looking forward to hopefully hosting that event this year,” Hergott said.

A teacher in the Horizon School Division did lend a helping hand to the group with his ‘longest day of golf’ event last summer after the postponement of the Diva for a Day scramble. Pledges were collected in support of BBBS and then Paul Raycroft along with three others golfed from sunrise to sunset on June 28.
