Two people have been charged with bootlegging near Wollaston Lake after RCMP received a tip from the public.

That’s according to an RCMP new release, which states officers were alerted Feb. 26 to a vehicle carrying a large quantity of beverage alcohol passing through the Moose Island checkpoint and heading toward Wollaston Lake. The vehicle was located, stopped by RCMP and officers allegedly witnessed alcohol in plain sight.

A search of the vehicle resulted in police locating and seizing 36 26-ounce bottles of whiskey, one 66-ounce bottle of vodka and three coolers. Two out of three occupants in the vehicle were arrested and subsequently charged.

Police would like to thank the public for their cooperation, noting the removal of this amount of alcohol resulted in reduced calls for service for alcohol-related incidents, and approximately 50 per cent fewer people arrested and held for alcohol-related incidents.

“The community involvement is everything,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Rob King said. “We can’t be everywhere, and it’s really the community taking responsibility and looking out for the welfare of the children and the community itself. As you can imagine, this amount of alcohol in any community would be significant, but it’s really the community stepping up and taking care of itself.”
