Deteriorating temporary surface on Highway 5 expected to cause delays

Mar 3, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The temporary winter surface on Highway 5 east of Saskatoon is seeing blowouts and surface failures.

Phase one of the multi-year project saw 10 kilometres of widening and sightline improvements from the Old 27 Road to Blucher Road with the exception of about three kilometres that was given a temporary, narrow surface for the winter.

Ministry of highways spokesperson Patrick Book said crews have lowered the speed limit and installed warning signs.

The contractor will begin work this week to complete a short-term fix until construction season starts.

“Potholes and surface failures can emerge as a result of winter weather conditions,” Book said in an email to northeastNOW.

When construction work begins again for the season, there are no viable detour options around the work zones.

“It will be best to use an alternate route such as Highways 41, 27 or Highway 16 and 2” Book said.

These alternate routes will be signed in advance to alert motorists. Drivers are reminded to be patient, expect delays, watch for workers and pay close attention to signs when driving through the work zone.

When construction season begins in May, the remaining three-kilometre stretch will be paved before phase two of the project gets underway.

“Phase two work will also begin on the approximately 15 kilometre of road west of the intersection of Highway 5 and Highway 2, including repaving, widening, sight line improvements, and the construction of eastbound and westbound passing lanes,” Book said.

Phase two is expected to be completed in 2022.

Design work is nearly complete for the second portion of Phase two, which includes the final 15 kilometres from Blucher Road to Highway 2. Work will include passing lanes, widening of shoulders, repaving, sight line improvements, access consolidation, intersection realignment on the St. Denis access, intersection treatments, and culvert replacements.

Phase three design work is also underway, which includes the twinning of Highway 5 from just east of Saskatoon, near the junction of Highway 41 to Old Road 27.

Construction of Phase three is expected to begin in Spring 2023.
