Nipawin and Melfort renewing rivalry during Go Out and Play Challenge

Melfort and Nipawin are renewing their rivalry during the the 2021 Saskatchewan Blue Cross Go Out and Play Challenge.

The Town of Nipawin challenged the City of Melfort to see who can log more minutes of physical activity online with Saskatchewan in Motion.

“We’re trying to get our residents out and active and have fun challenging another community,” Town of Nipawin director of parks and recreation Chelsea Corrigan said. “Melfort is the perfect community to challenge for us.”

“Nipawin is a mirror image of our community,” City of Melfort recreation programmer Shannon Marshall said. “It will be really cool to go head to head and see if we can log more minutes than them.”

The two communities are having a snowman and snow sculpture contest as an extra incentive to log minutes. Judging for the contest is taking place March 8 and 9. Rumberger & Fettis Accounting has offered to sponsor the contest. Winners will be announced March 10. Thirty-eight communities across Saskatchewan are competing in the 2021 Go Out and Play Challenge. As of March 4 , Melfort is in 23^th place and Nipawin is 30^th.

The grand prize is $10,000 for a project that gets kids and families out to move. Nipawin would put the prize money toward an outdoor multi-sport court.

“We do need a new court,” Corrigan said. “We are looking at different ideas for that.”

Marshall said Melfort would use the money for a project they are calling inflatable family fun.

“It’s a bunch of bouncy castles, bouncers and sumo suits,” Marshall told northeastNOW. “We could use them on Canada Day or other outdoor celebrations.”

The 10-day Go Out and Play Challenge is taking place until March 10.
