Dobson Welding in Melfort has changed owners as Bill Jung is retiring after 48 years with the business.

Bill’s son Rob Jung is moving on after working at Dobson Welding for 32 years. Bill said he is hoping to stay busy by fishing, hunting, and golfing, and Rob will now be able to spend more time focusing on his art.

“Forty-eight years is enough,” Bill said. “That’s the only reason we sold the shop.”

Bill’s grandson Kaden Jung also worked part-time for Dobson Welding over the past few years.

“It’s been mostly family, but we’ve had other employees too,” Bill said. “It just kind of happened. We’ve kept the farmers going and fixed their breakdowns, and we did work for everybody else too. We had our regulars. There’s not many repair shops left. There’s lots of production welding.”

Bill’s father-in-law Jack Dobson started the business more than six decades ago.

Dobson Welding officially changed hands on Monday. The new owners are Ryan Lefebvre and his grandfather Jim Drury.

“They had it [Dobson Welding] listed and we’ve been talking about buying it for many months,” Lefebvre said. “I haven’t really told anyone until this week. It finally happened. I wanted to keep the name… I don’t think much is going to change.”

Drury is a silent partner and Lefebvre has been welding in the area for nearly nine years.

Bill will be sticking around to help with the transition and said he is confident that the new owners will do well.

“They are very energetic and have great personalities,” Bill added. “I’m sure they won’t need me for long.”

“Bill is the nicest guy ever,” Lefebvre said. “He has a very good reputation in town. I’m more than happy to learn from him. He’s very talented in many areas.”
