Council agrees to amend crosswalk policy

Meadow Lake City Council has agreed to an amendment that will add more crossing signs for pedestrians at intersections. The change comes after one resident raised their concern over children’s safety and alerting drivers to pedestrians crossing the road.

The new amendment applies to the crosswalks policy drafted by the Bylaw and Public Works Department as part of an SGI pedestrian safety grant project. An additional 20 crossing signs were installed at intersections following that project. The effect of the amendment will open up the addition of signage to any uncontrolled intersections.

In a letter to council, a resident explained the east side Dunfield Crescent across from 9th Avenue does not currently have a crosswalk or pedestrian signage. The letter was signed by other concerned parents in the neighbourhood as well.

“I strongly believe crosswalk lights and a painted pedestrian crosswalk would alert drivers to pedestrians and help pedestrians cross more safely,” the resident wrote.

Based on 2020 pricing, the estimated coast to install crossing signs at an intersection is priced at $300 for one location. For comparison, the addition of the pedestrian crossing sign with solar lighting and a push button came out to nearly $8,000. With that in mind, the city agreed adding a painted path and signs would be beneficial to the area, but did not feel the illuminated signage noted in the letter would be necessary.

Along with the amendment, council recommended discretion be used with installations as there are several crosswalks less than 300 metres apart. Council documents included crosswalk standard guidelines stating if there are too many crosswalks within a close distance, drivers could become more inclined to ignore them.

Any new signage will be installed on May 1 at the earliest.
