North Battleford advocate plans cross-country walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

A North Battleford advocate plans to embark on a journey across Canada next year to raise awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).

Krista Fox said she will be thinking of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin, and all MMIW wherever she travels.

Morin, 31, of Ahtahkakoop First Nation, was last seen July 10 of 2018. RCMP stated in July 2019, a year after their investigation, they believe Morin was the victim of a homicide.

Fox hopes her walk will get the word out about the names of all MMIW, and increase awareness of this national tragedy.

She plans to take a leave of absence from her employer, and embark on her journey Feb. 7, 2022. Fox hopes to complete the walk by the end of November of that year, starting in Victoria, B.C., and ending in Newfoundland.

“About two weeks ago I sat down with my family, and I said I am going to walk across Canada,” she said. “I think they thought I was a little bit crazy. But after understanding I was going to do it for MMIW and for Ash, they were on board.”

Fox will be joined by Morin’s mother Diane and sister Janine for support along the way.

Information about the walk is posted on Krista’s Kilometres for MMIW Facebook page. Fox said there has been a great deal of public interest right across Canada since she started her post.

“It’s a little bit overwhelming, but I have had people, families reach out from B.C. right to Newfoundland,” she said.
