Stars forward Spence commits to Portage College

North Stars forward Logan Spence has committed to Portage College for the fall of 2021.

A North Battleford product, Spence played his entire ‘Junior A’ career with the North Stars, suiting up for nearly 70 games over parts of five seasons with the team.

Spence said he is looking forward to the opportunity ahead, to take his game to the post-secondary level with the Voyageurs; and play for a familiar face behind the bench, in former North Stars’ coach Nate Bedford.

“I played for Nate when I was 16 [with the Stars] for a little bit, so that was a big connection and knowing the coach was huge,” he said. “They also offer a really good power engineering program down there and so I’m looking forward to that too.”

While never the biggest player on the ice—listed at 5’9, 178 lbs.—Spence became known for his abrasive style of play and tone-setting physicality over his time with the Stars. During the 2019-20 campaign, the winger finished fifth in league penalty minutes (PIMS), with 186 PIMS in just 43 games.

In addition to the physicality, Spence’s intangibles, both on the ice and off, are something coach of the North Stars Brayden Klimosko said made him a valuable asset to the club and should only continue to do so at the next level.

“He’s really had an impact in the dressing room as someone who’s well-liked and well-respected,” Klimosko said. “He was a real key contributor to the room and a warrior on the ice during his years here. This commitment is awesome news for him obviously, and it’s exciting to see him move on to the college level.”

Spence said he is grateful to have been able to play his junior hockey in front of the hometown Battlefords crowd, adding that it’s something he’ll always remember fondly as he now looks forward to what lies ahead in his hockey career.

“It was obviously a dream to be able to play for the North Stars, and getting to win the Canalta [Cup] in 2019 was absolutely phenomenal too,” he said. “The teams in Battlefords were the closest teams I’ve ever been on and it was just a joy to come to the rink everyday and play for those guys.”

Portage College is located in Lac La Biche, AB. The Voyageurs finished the 2020 season ninth overall in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) standings.
