Meadow Lake teen overseeing fundraiser for education of young Guatemalan women

Mckenna McAmmond, a member of the Meadow Lake RCMP’s Youth Advisory Committee, is collaborating with other people in her missions trip team to raise money for computers and supplies. These supplies will help young women in Guatemala pursue their educational goals.

McAmmond said the inspiration for the fundraiser came from her missions trip team’s travel to the country where they assisted locals with tasks during their visit.

“All of the love and support they gave us while we were there,” McAmmond said. “I thought I would return the favour and help out my friends in Guatemala because I know that they don’t have as much as we do here. I think education is one of the most important things in life and I would like everyone to have a chance at getting a good education.”

McAmmond and her team are accepting monetary donations, but they are also hosting a silent auction on Facebook and collaborating with Cookies on Call to offer cookie packages with a portion of the proceeds going to the cause.

“We were wondering if they would like to help us out and they decided that they were going to make up these cookie baskets with icing and all that. So they made up these baskets and they have silhouettes of children apples and schools and all that. They’re selling them for $25, and $5 from every sale will go toward my fundraiser.”

Cookie baskets will need to be pre-ordered ahead of the March 19-20 pickup dates. The Facebook auction is currently underway until it closes on March 12 at 8 p.m. McAmmond mentioned the fundraising goal is set at $5,400. With 22 days left until the deadline, the cause is currently sitting near $3,900. She added people can reach out to her on Facebook if they have any questions or would like to make a donation.

McAmmond stated while she is overseeing the Meadow Lake side of the fundraiser, she has received assistance from other members of her missions trip team and other individuals.

“A lot of people are texting me and thanking me for everything, but I want to put it out there that it is my whole missions trip group that is helping me. I couldn’t have done it without them and everyone who is giving me donations. I am so thankful for everyone helping me out with this.”

Anyone who would like to donate to the cause or bid on an item can do so on the Guatemala Girls Education Fundraiser Facebook page.
