SaskPower explains price discrepancy in tri-communities

SaskPower has responded to an information request about basic monthly service price discrepancies between local municipalities and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB).

“Our basic monthly charge we charge all our customers across the province comes down to how a community is assigned according to The Municipalities Act,” SaskPower spokesperson Scott McGregor said. “We kind of just default to whatever that act states certain communities are, so that defaults to urban to rural to village, things like that.”

McGregor explained most First Nations in Saskatchewan are classified as rural unless the land in question is an urban reserve or holds another kind of special status. That means even if a reserve is directly adjacent to La Ronge, the basic monthly charge will still be higher.

In La Ronge and Air Ronge the basic monthly rate is $22.79 per month, while LLRIB customers are charged $32.90 per month. In one year, a customer living on reserve will be charged an additional $121.32 for the same service.

“The usage charge is the same, but that basic usage charge does vary,” McGregor said.

An online Facebook post by Tayven Roberts last week brought the discrepancy to light and the post has been shared many times. larongeNOW reached out to Roberts for an interview, but he didn’t respond by publishing.

McGregor also noted if customers do live on reserve, it is up to them to contact SaskPower for a tax exemption. Documentation will be required and customers should contact the Crown corporation at 1-888-SKPOWER.
