Pre-Cam reopens after air tests for asbestos come back negative

La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Community School reopened Monday after it suddenly closed last week because of possible asbestos contamination concerns.

That’s according to Northern Lights School Division superintendent of facilities Doug Hrycuik, who said a contractor inadvertently drilled holes into an exterior wall last Thursday night and released a small amount of vermiculite. He noted the contractor wanted to ensure there was no asbestos contamination, so the school was closed Friday for air monitoring to be completed.

“We took the steps to bring in a professional from Prince Albert who had done our original asbestos reporting in the building,” Hrycuik said. “We did an air test. It came back negative. Any of the vermiculite, which may have asbestos in it, was cleaned up and everything was deemed safe.”

Hrycuik explained the health of students and staff is the top priority for the facilities department, adding there is no safety risk to anyone.

In a letter to parents from the school division, it was stated asbestos is typically found in structural material and that during the process of repairs, maintenance or renovations, asbestos-containing materials may be disturbed and release asbestos fibres into the air. Inhaling or ingesting asbestos could lead to serious health conditions.

Hrycuik noted Pre-Cam reopened Monday without any issues. The school division is also appreciative for the patience and support from parents while the matter was addressed.
