NESD releases 2021/2022 school calander, students to start before long weekend

The calendar for the 2021/2022 school year in the North East School Division (NESD) has been released.

It’s a pretty normal scheduled for the year, but director of education Don Rempel said they have moved around a few ‘School Planning Days’ throughout the year to create more of a “natural break”.

“There will be a School Planning Day connected to the Jan. 31 turnaround day for students between semesters,” Rempel told NortheastNOW. “And then another School Planning Day for staff connected to Easter in the spring of 2022.”

The other portion of the schedule that families should be aware of is also the start of classes for students in September. For 2021/2022, students will return to the classroom on Sept. 2, prior to the Labour Day long weekend. Rempel said they normally try and start students after the long weekend, but there are some variables that come into play.

“The variables are; when the long weekend is in September,” Rempel said. “And also if June 29 and 30 are available for you to use, or if they’re on the weekend, that kind of boxes you in sometimes.”

Rempel added that they have to make sure all the required teaching hours are alloted through the school year.

With the ever-changing world of COVID-19 as well, Rempel said they hope to be able to go back to a normal school year, but they are prepared should they need to adjust. He said block scheduling could become more prevalent in schools, but that would come down to a decision based on instruction and ultimately the schools would decide if that would be implemented.

The provincial budget is also on the horizon and Rempel said they are in the planning stages for next year. He also said they are early in the stages of working towards a new four-year plan after a recent ‘though exchange’ which had participation from staff and the public.

Meanwhile, NESD has officially welcomed their board member for subdivision 5, which includes Gronlid, Star City, and Naicam. Tyler Waldner was elected through the by-election held on March 8. Waldner defeated Dale Wojciechowski by a vote of 47-14.
