Humboldt city council exploring options after community’s last taxi service shuts down

The City of Humboldt is exploring new transportation options for the community as the city’s last taxi service suspended operations.

Direct Drive Taxi & Delivery announced on Facebook that they would shut down services by the end of February because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve had many taxi services in the city and they’ve all shut down over various reasons,” Humboldt Mayor Michael Behiel said. “It’s a tough business in a smaller city.”

Direct Drive Taxi & Delivery previously closed down at the beginning of the pandemic but resumed services in June.

“This really concerns me that a section of our vulnerable community has no access to easy transportation,” Behiel said. “I don’t want anybody deprived of any of their essential services. I encourage anybody who is having those difficulties to contact city hall and we will try and find a solution for you until we can get something in place. It’s something that’s an extremely high priority for the city.”

Humboldt city council and administration have discussed solutions including seeing if the ridesharing service Uride would come to the community.

“We’re trying to get some level of interest or commitment from them,” Behiel added.

Behiel said they may also expand the city’s Handibus ridership. The Handibus is presently used to serve people with disabilities in the community.

“It’s something that we could look at immediately for some of the people that are desperately reliant on public transportation services for getting around,” Behiel said.

The city currently doesn’t have any interest in operating a taxi service.
