Boiler sparks fire at St. George’s Hill School

St. George’s Hill School will be closed until after the Easter break after a fire broke out on Thursday.

The fire was found by the principal at about 7:30 a.m. and was caused by a malfunctioning boiler. Northern Lights School Division superintendent of facilities Doug Hrycuik explained an internal fire escaped because a fire box was ineffective, resulting in some damage to wires in the boiler room.

The boiler itself is no longer operable and there was very little smoke damage to the school itself.

“We have filters in the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system that contain most of the contaminates for the smoke,” Hrycuik said. “We’re in the process of cleaning the school and making sure it is viable for the kids to come back.”

Hrycuik noted the school is safe and the air quality is good. He added there is no danger to anyone and the school remains heated by other boilers.

“We are looking into what the cause exactly was, how not to let it happen again and it was very lucky we were able to be there when we were to put the fire out,” Hrycuik said. “Our team did a good job, especially the principal who runs that school.”

St. George’s Hill School has approximately 40 students between kindergarten and Grade 9. It includes two classrooms and a small gymnasium.
