Table Mountain wraps challenging but successful ski season

As the month of March draws to a close, the skiing/snowboarding season has as well at Table Mountain.

The local ski hill has announced the wrap-up of their season, following what was a challenging, yet successful year for the establishment.

General manager, Lawrence Blouin said while the season took a while to get started due to COVID-19 restrictions, ultimately, they were very pleased with the turnout and response from the community once receiving the green light to open for the year.

“It wasn’t a record-breaking season, but it probably turned out a little better than what we expected, and I think that’s because we were really the only game in town,” Blouin said. “Hockey got shut down and all the indoor sports basically were shut down too, or [were limited], so we had a lot of traffic coming in from other sports that certainly helped us out.”

Table Mountain typically opens the first weekend in December, although this year – due to the pandemic – they were unable to open until early January. Once they did open their doors, the ski locale then opted for just a three-day-a-week schedule from Friday to Sunday rather than their usual weekday days of operation as well.

Blouin said they are hopeful to be able to return to a bit more normalcy by the time next season rolls around; though he added their experience this year has ensured they are prepared for whatever may lie ahead.

“We’re very hopeful with the vaccines coming out now and people getting vaccinated, that we can get back to some level of normal, or whatever the ‘new normal’ is going to be,” Blouin said. “I don’t think we’ll be back to quite how things were before [the pandemic], but we’re hoping we can get back to a semi-normal season next year.”

“That said, if we have to go through [current restrictions] for another year, I guess we now have one year under our belt and there’s probably not a lot we would change,” he added.

Table Mountain will be closed to the public for the spring and summer months, to allow adequate time for upkeep and regular maintenance on the buildings and chairlift.

Blouin said they appreciate the community turnout this year, and are already looking forward to next winter, and opening the slopes once again.

“I’d just like to thank everybody that came out and visited us this winter,” he said. “Hopefully they enjoyed themselves, and we’re looking forward to serving them again next year.”
