Living Sky School Division discussed its plans for the clean up work at Unity Composite High School, following a small fire earlier this month.

The school announced on its Facebook page there was a fire in an upstairs washroom on March 9. Staff and students evacuated safely during the incident. The RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Unity Fire Department confirmed the blaze started when one of the toilet paper dispensers had been set on fire. The fire was contained to the area and resulted in mostly smoke damage.

Living Sky School Division Chief Financial Officer Lonny Darroch discussed the estimated costs for the clean up work at the recent school board meeting. A contractor has been hired to complete the work. Darroch said the fire caused more extensive smoke damage than what he initially anticipated.

The estimated cost for the remediation work is about $125,000.

“We’re looking at having most of the work done during Easter break… However, there is some plumbing and electrical work that needs to be done in the washroom,” he said. “They will be on-site prior to the Easter break to do some tear down in there.”
