It may have been held almost entirely online, but the 2021 Amachewespimawin Virtual Winter Festival has been declared a big hit by organizers.

“It was a total shot in the dark, much like any activity we have all done in this past year,” said Stanley Mission Sport, Culture and Recreation Director Gordon McKenzie. “Just based on the cards we were dealt, I think it was a huge success. I really didn’t know what to expect, but with the outcome, I am proud of this community.”

The festivities began March 15 with a Youth Talent Show and was followed up a week later with a Family Air Band Contest on March 23 and the Grand Ole Opry Talent Show on March 24. In addition, a vehicle parade and fireworks were held March 25, a virtual fun night occurred March 26 and trapper events including animal calling, jigging and a buckskin competition took place March 27.

“It was a total shot in the dark much like any activity we have all done in this past year,” said McKenzie. “Just based on the cards we were dealt, I think it was a huge success. I really didn’t know what to expect, but with the outcome, I am proud of this community.”

“We usually have so much interaction with people coming in from Saskatchewan and some part of Manitoba and Alberta to come compete and spectate and be a part of it all,” McKenzie said, noting the festival this year was limited to community members due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Ministry of Health did approve a safety proposal submitted by organizers to go ahead with a fish derby March 28, which had more than $6,000 in prizes. McKenzie mentioned the derby was also deemed a success as 204 people participated.

A major difference in 2021 compared to previous years is there was no crowning of King or Queen Trapper. McKenzie would like to host the event in the summer after more residents are vaccinated.
