Registration open for potential 2021 baseball season

Organizers of the La Ronge and Area Minor Baseball League is hopeful the 2021 season will begin May 3.

Registration, which opened back in March, will close April 12 and organizer Corey Borthwick expects approximately 200 kids to sign up. The league is open to those ages three to 15.

“We’re still waiting for the government, but it looks promising with vaccinations being rolled out,” he said, adding May 3 is a tentative date and can be pushed back. “We haven’t been given the green light, per say, for operating a full-fledged season yet. Hopefully, by May, they actually make an announcement and the season can go on.”

Spring baseball training sessions are currently happening at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Those sessions are held once per week until the end of the month and Borthwick noted around 60 kids are participating.

The sessions have been following public health orders requiring training to have no more than eight people in a bubble. There is also no inter-competition between teams. Borthwick believes all the spots in the league will fill up as residents seem to be ready to engage in sporting activities again.

“Baseball is kind of good because sometimes part of the game lends itself to social distancing,” he said. “When you are on the defensive side of the field, you are already spaced out so that’s not a concern. It’s mostly the hitter or base runner when you get into close contact, and then the dugout.”

Borthwick doesn’t think snow will be an issue in one month from now as it is usually completely gone by the time the league starts in May. He said sometimes the fields are still a bit wet.

So far, about 90 people are registered for baseball and Borthwick expects that number to rise quickly in the coming days. Those interested in registering for baseball can do so here.
