Nachbaur’s ‘Gordie’ and Peekeekoot’s first lift Raiders over Broncos

After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to the Winnipeg ICE on Friday, Prince Albert Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid called out all of his veteran players and said he wanted to see a lot more from his experienced group of players.

Justin Nachbaur heard his coach loud and clear, as Nachbaur had a Gordie Howe hat trick in the first period to lead the Raiders (4-6-1-1) to a 4-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos (3-8-1). The win snaps a three-game losing streak.

Nachbaur got his assist on the Raiders’ first power play of the night, as his low shot was deflected off of Raider rookie Dallyn Peekeekoot and into the net for Peekeekoot’s first WHL career goal. Nachbaur then ripped home a point shot on a one-timer from Ozzy Wiesblatt for his goal. Then, Nachbaur capped off the ‘Gordie’ with a scrap with Broncos’ big man Kaleb Bulych, after Bulych hit Raider rookie Logan Linklater hard into the glass.

“That’s obviously pretty special,” Nachbaur said about his goal, assist and fight all in the opening frame. “It was a good pass by Ozzy [Wiesblatt], Peeks scored his first, that’s awesome. And I like to play a physical game, that’s what you have to do sometimes.”

Habscheid liked how his team responded, especially from a guy like Nachbaur who set the tone early int the game.

“Nachbaur was great, he was a presence,” Habscheid said. “Scored a nice goal, defended a teammate. Yeah, he was good.”

It only took Peekeekoot three games to score his first WHL goal. It may have been more of a pinball machine goal, as it deflected off of him and Bronco defender Sam McGinley before ending up in the net, but he’ll take it any day of the week.

“In 10 years from now, his description is going to be he went behind our net, went through eight guys, went back behind our net and went through another eight guys, then roofed it,” Habscheid said. “But it doesn’t matter how they go in, and it went in.

“But he’s an impressive player. He’s impressed the heck out of me,” Habscheid added. “He’s already around the net. He’s a very intelligent player, has a heavy stick, he’s smart and he’s played real well. He’s earned his ice time and he’s going to get better and better.”

Ever since Peekeekoot made the Raiders as a late addition, hundreds of people from his home community of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has shown their support on social media.

Seeing, reading and hearing that outpouring of support has given Peekeekoot all the motivation he needs heading into each game.

“It just brings my spirits up so high,” Peekeekoot said. “It just gives me a lot of excitement going into a game, doing something for my community and just love the game, and do what I love to do—just play hockey and be my best.”

Spencer Moe also scored his first goal of the season, which ended up being the game-winner. Eric Pearce had the empty-net goal late for the Raiders.

Sam McGinley and Josh Filmon scored for the Broncos.
