Northern Lights Gallery in Melfort hosting Slow Art Day event

Apr 3, 2021 | 10:00 AM

Slow Art Day takes place in one week.

On April 10, the international event suggests slowing down and appreciating art.

The Northern Lights Gallery in Melfort is hosting its own event to recognize the day according to owner Sandra Dancey.

“There are going to be five artists participating, all from the neighbourhood, that have international recognition,” Dancey said.

While the day has been happening for the past 11 years worldwide, this will be the first event for the gallery located on Main St. in Melfort.

“If COVID has taught us anything it’s that having art you fully appreciate in your home is an important contribution to quality of life,” Dancey said. “I thought this was a good time to join in with Slow Art Day.”

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to allow anyone that is interested to stop in and view a small collection of artwork by Monica Whenham-Daschuk, Linsey Levendall, Beth Bentz, Jim Mason, and Al Jardine.

“Come in and look at one piece of art, not everything on the wall, don’t just glance at it or take a snapshot with your phone,” Dancey said. “Actually, look at it and take in everything the artist was trying to communicate.”

Dancey is also encouraging those who plan to attend to also bring a friend.

“Go for a coffee or walk after and talk about it, and that way, you maybe get a second interpretation of the piece,” Dancey said. “You can share ideas and that’s kind of what art is all about.”

Some work will have a write-up by the artist, some will have questions from the artist to start a conversation about the piece.
