Liberty Athletics invites residents to ‘Light it up for the Lighthouse’

This Friday, Apr. 9, residents are encouraged to ‘Light it up for the Lighthouse’ in support of The Lighthouse shelter in North Battleford.

The event, which is a collaborative fundraiser by Liberty Athletics in support of The Lighthouse, is the latest in the community’s show of support for the non-profit, after federal funding for the Battlefords’ emergency shelter ended at the end of March, leading to an uncertain fate for the organization.

Light it Up for the Lighthouse invites those in the community to register to participate in a 30 minute living room workout, with no special gear required. All donations from registrations will then be donated to the shelter.

Manager of Liberty Athletics, Kayla Smith said the idea for the fundraiser came about in an effort to help support the establishment in their time of need, to continue operations.

“Because the Lighthouse was closing down, we wanted to think of something we could do to help raise some funds for it, and try to help it stay open,” Smith said. “Especially right now with the pandemic, a lot of people and organizations do need a bit of extra help, so we just wanted to do something where we could help someone else out a little bit.”

A donation from the Metis Nation has allowed The Lighthouse to continue to keep their facility doors open for the time being, but the shelter is in great need of community support, and are currently seeking long-term financial stability in order to meet their mandate and continue to provide their facilities to those in need in the community.

Manager with the Lighthouse, Judy Armstrong said it’s been special to see the community come together to offer their support, through fundraisers and events such as Light it Up.

“I think it’s just wonderful,” Armstrong said. “I think people are realizing that we’re needed in the community and there are so many people who are stepping up and just helping out a little bit here and a little bit there. I think there’s just such kindness out there and people really do care. It’s very heartwarming.”

Light it up for the Lighthouse will run from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday. To learn more or to register today, visit the Liberty Athletics website, The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords Facebook page, or call Liberty Athletics at (306) 937-6606.
