National pageant brings a local flavour

There will be a Prince Albert flavour for a national competition held in Toronto.

The Miss Canada Globe Productions pageant is celebrating its 21st year. Focused on building contestants’ self-development and confidence, the categories highlight the importance of education to youth in their community, community involvement, educational excellence and being a role model for youth.

One of the contestants is Shayna Bisson. She was excited to enter the Miss Canada Petite category after being inspired by the previous winner.

“I had the lady who won last year reach out to me and asked me if I’d like to compete because I looked like somebody who might be interested in it,” Bisson told paNOW.

Bisson fits the qualifications well since she is no taller than 5’ 5”, between the ages of 18 to 29 and hoping for the experience to travel and meet new friends.

“I have never been to Toronto so maybe it will take me further in life, which is always good,” she said.

It comes as no surprise Shayna would be inspired by the 2020/2021 ‘Petite’ winner. Crowned in September 2020, Jamie de Roos is the first person to win for the province of Saskatchewan since 2005. She will compete for the international title next.

With community a focus for Miss Canada, De Roos has become a huge advocate bringing awareness and supports for people struggling with mental health issues.

“I use my platform to advocate for mental health awareness and ending the stigma of mental illness,” de Roos said. “I usually find people who have mental illness and experience stigma that want to share their story and I usually feature them live on my page. I try to keep it pretty local, finding people from Saskatchewan to feature them, as well.”

While the experience for the ladies will be a major life event for them, there are costs involved. To qualify, local sponsors are required to help fund their endeavor. The sponsors receive a title at the end of the pageant and the funds help with the contestant’s expenses. A total of $3,000 is part of the registration fee to pay for hotel, wardrobe, limo, cosmetics and pageantry incidentals. The registration deadline for other contestants to qualify is mid-July.

Bisson says the fundraising efforts have already started for her.

“I have done some so far. I picked up a bunch of bottles and I did a bottle drive.”

The competition is usually held the second week of August each year and can be viewed on the Miss Canada Globe Productions Facebook page with the final night aired on pay-per-view.
