Scattered Site contract renewed with services to resume next week

The provincial government has pulled through with another one-year contract for La Ronge’s Scattered Site Outreach Program.

Scattered Site was forced to close about one week ago after the organization’s previous contract expired and there was no word from the province on whether or not it would be renewed. Kikinahk Friendship Centre executive director Ron Woytowich said he received confirmation of the renewal Wednesday and he expects the program will be operational again April 12.

“It happens every year and it was expected,” he said about funding concerns. “The bottom line is the phone call I received from them is they were sorry they were a little bit late, but because of COVID, they have a lot of contracts to renew and they got around to us.”

Woytowich explained three employees who were laid off from Scattered Site have been asked to come back. The Saskatchewan Health Authority specifically funds Scattered Site to deliver mental health and addictions assistance and referrals for La Ronge’s at-risk population. Other services, like free meals, are also served out of the downtown location.

Woytowich noted he doesn’t know yet if the contract is worth more or less than in previous years. He also wasn’t sure if he could strike a multi-year deal with the province to prevent a repeat of what happened this year in coming years.

“We’ve been used to that every year and it’s all conditional on the budget,” Woytowich said.
