Meadow Lake area parks set to receive utility, campground infrastructure upgrades

The provincial government’s record spending on capital infrastructure projects in provincial parks will see sites and campgrounds in the Meadow Lake area receive upgrades to amenities and utilities.

Earlier this week, the Saskatchewan government announced more than $18-million had been allocated for capital infrastructure and maintenance projects for provincial parks, the largest capital budget in the province’s history. With funding seemingly not being an issue this year, Byron Davis, executive director of Parks Infrastructure and Capital Planning, stated the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport will continue building upon current projects while installing some new additions to some areas.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to have additional stimulus program funding for park capital improvements over two years, [including] the last fiscal year and the current one, which provided additional over $10-million for park facilities in addition to our base capital programs,” Davis said.

“It’s always important that we keep our facilities well-maintained, in good shape and safe for our park visitors. We replace or upgrade our facilities when needed. Our visitation remains high and I think the people who visit our parks expect top-quality facilities and safe facilities for them and their families. We are happy to deliver those types of improvements.”

In conjunction with the Ministry of Highways, road improvements will be made to Highway 26 near Greig Lake Campground and the boat launch access area by late fall. Electrical service upgrades in the same area are expected to take place at the end of the season. The Ministry will continue to develop and improve the Boreal Trail such as clearing and surfacing.

Flotten Campground is set to receive improvements to the water system. Sandybeach Campground’s storage units are to be expanded at some point during the season. Matheson Campground is slated to have the water plant replaced and receive upgrades to the electrical system. Waterhen Lake is expected to have its boat launch expanded to allow for increased capacity and reduced congestion. The boat launch expansion should be completed by early spring.

Davis mentioned the increased demand in several areas, including the Waterhen Lake boat launch, has led to increased wear and tear. He said this reason is why they will be expanding the capabilities of the current unit.

“There has been a lot more activity recently with boating, so a lot of our park’s boat launches can become congested and deteriorate over time. So it’s just part of our normal upgrading of the facilities to meet the increased demand that’s coming on.”

Each of the projects is estimated to cost anywhere from nearly $80,000 to $200,000.
