La Ronge council to discuss hosting virtual State of the Town address

In a continued push for transparency, La Ronge council will discuss the idea of hosting a State of the Town Address in the coming months at tonight’s town council meeting.

Mayor Colin Ratushniak explained the idea came from La Ronge’s new chief administrative officer Steven Brown, noting it is a concept being done in North Battleford. He said an address could be held once a month or every two months and is meant to encourage a more inclusive way of delivering information to residents.

“We’re still trying to figure out the structure of it, but it will likely be sort of on a Zoom platform and then just trying to engage with residents in a different way,” Ratushniak said. “In the past, not a lot of people were attending the town halls and, with technology, it makes it a lot easier for people to attend, ask questions and get interactive with it.”

Ratushniak also mentioned it would be a good idea to host such a meeting because many months have now passed since the new council was elected in 2020. There is no tentative date set for an inaugural address, but it could include Ratushniak and fellow councillors.

“It would be really great to get all the councillors involved in the beginning just to make sure everyone is fresh,” he said. “All council members will have a say in what is going to be out in these State of the Town addresses.”

Since the current council was elected, there has been a push for transparency and increased public confidence. In January, a new bylaw adopting a Code of Conduct for council was enforced and, earlier this month, a draft municipal budget was released earlier than anticipated.
