P.A. mayor wants bigger fines for parking on sidewalks

Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne wants to see the fine for parking on or obstructing sidewalks hiked from $20 to $100.

Dionne told paNOW he was frustrated to see several examples of the offense recently, prompting him to take action.

“Over the weekend, I was mad enough when I was driving home and I watched a young girl struggle with her carriage to get around a car,” he said. “And then what topped it is when I got closer to my house, I saw a guy in a wheelchair looking up at the big truck parked on the sidewalk, trying to figure out how to get around it.”

Dionne explained the problem is particularly bad in neighbourhoods with grass boulevards, where drivers can pull off the street into the driveway, but still block the sidewalk.

He added the city has had success cutting down instances of other types of traffic violations by increasing fines.

“We did that with…handicap parking [violations],” he said. “We took the fine from $25 dollars to $350, or $200 if you paid earlier, and that solved the problem.”

Council will discuss Dionne’s proposal to up the sidewalk parking fine at the next regular council meeting.
