Prince Albert’s Citizen of The Year for 2020 is Margaret Ferguson.

She’s being honoured for her extraordinary efforts in helping the less fortunate in the community.

Ferguson, 79, told paNOW she’s always had a passion for sewing. The volunteer quilting group she’s run since 2012 has produced countless items for the homeless. Ever since her husband died she said she felt compelled to do something for the cause.

“I just hated to see homeless people on the street; we generally average one person a year who dies from the cold,” she explained. “I see people who are homeless and it just breaks my heart.”

The Citizen of the Year award is presented by the Prince Albert Daily Herald and the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club.

She said she was taken completely by surprise when she was told of the honour Wednesday evening and she’s eager to acknowledge everyone who helps.

“It’s not just me, it’s my church ladies, my Girl Guide ladies, other people too. If I put out a call for jeans [for example] on Facebook I get them from all over the province. So many people help and volunteer,” she said.

Well-connected

She said it was the same situation when it comes to collecting items for Community Cares Kitchen.

“If we’re making soup then people just drop off vegetables and meat. I happen to have the contacts so I can see that it gets to the right place. But it’s just amazing how much people try to help others.”

According to the P.A. Daily News the usual banquet honouring the newly announced Citizen of the Year can’t happen this year because of COVID-19 restrictions.
