Alberta confirms country’s second blood clot after AstraZeneca vaccine dose
COVID-19 alarm bells sounded across the country Saturday, with Alberta confirming Canada’s second rare blood clot case in a patient who received the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and two long-standing infection hot spots registering concerning new peaks in virus-related hospitalizations.
At the epicentre of the national outbreak, meanwhile, the Ontario government walked back some widely criticized new measures meant to contain surging case counts across the province.
Alberta’s chief medical health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said a male patient, who is in his 60s and recovering, marks the second Canadian case of the blood clot disorder known as vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or VITT.
Hinshaw said she is taking the event “extremely seriously,” but continues to recommend AstraZeneca for anyone 55 and older.
