Melfort Fire Chief warns of phone scam asking for funds as part of department

The Melfort Fire Department is warning of a scam that seems to be going around the city.

Fire chief Shaun Stewart told northeastNOW that he was made aware on Monday afternoon of a citizen who had received a call from someone claiming to be part of the department and they were looking for donations as part of a fundraiser. The citizen did not give the caller any money but did contact Stewart to see how they could get the money to the department. Stewart said to not send out any money, and that over the phone is not their typical way of fundraising.

“We don’t do any fundraising over the phone,” Stewart said. “Anything we do will generally be in person.”

He pointed to the annual Wing Ding fundraiser in December and helping the RCMP out with their golf tournament.

Stewart said it’s disappointing to see someone try and scam the department.

“It’s extremely frustrating to think that someone would go to that extent,” he said.

Stewart said the department is very trusting and that sometimes people see that and think they can exploit such an organization.

RCMP has been notified, according to Stewart, and they are going to keep an eye on things.
