Power pole fire causes 12-hour outage for 6,600 SaskPower customers in the area

A transmission pole fire caused wide-spread power outage in the area on Sunday.

Scott McGregor with SaskPower told northeastNOW the outage effected around 6,600 customers.

“We suspect it was from a stubble fire that just kind of crept up the structure there and took out a transmission line which effected a number of communities,” McGregor said.

Pole fires are typical in the spring but according to McGregor the fires are not usually caused by stubble fires.

“That said, with the conditions as dry as they are around the province right now, it does happen,” McGregor said.

The outage was initially reported just after 10:30 a.m. in the Annaheim, Bruno, Drake, Humboldt, Jansen, lake Lenore, Lanigan, Meacham, Middle Lake, Prud’Homme, St. Gregor, Alvena, Cudworth, Domremy, Duck Lake, Hague, Hepburn, laird, Prince Albert, Rosthern, St. Benedict, Wakaw, Waldheim, Archerwill, Kelvington, Lintlaw, Margo, Rose Valley and Wadena areas.

Crews were dispatched but needed to wait until the fire was completely out in order to safely conduct repairs.

“Overall, the entire outage lasted about 12 hours though we were able to get customers in the Watson area back on after doing some switching,” McGregor said.

Power has been restored to all customers but some further repairs will most likely be required at the site of the fire.

“With

in the Watson area, they would have experienced the initial outage and then later in the day there was a second outage that was for some equipment being repaired,” McGregor said.

No coming outages are expected because of the pole fire.

McGregor recommends checking the SaskPower website for details on planned outages.

If anyone notices a SaskPower structure on fire, a downed line, or damage to any power poles, report it to the crown corporation so a crew can be sent to make necessary repairs.
