Fire ban in effect for RM of Battle River and Town of Battleford

Apr 29, 2021 | 11:41 AM

A fire ban will be in effect for the Rural Municipality of Battle River No. 438 and the Town of Battleford starting Friday until further notice.

Battleford Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Geoff Thompson said the ban is needed due to very dry conditions, and a lack of rain in the weather forecast.

Controlled burning of any kind is prohibited for the area until further notice, except approved fire pits within the Town of Battleford.

“The weather has turned out good lately. We were expecting some snow or flurries,” Thompson said. “But that never took place.”

As a result, he said, the grasslands in the area remain extremely dry.

On Wednesday afternoon firefighters were busy putting out a grass fire near Highgate in the RM of Battle River, where a fire spread from the area near Highway 16.

Thompson hopes with a fire ban in place it might help prevent further blazes in the area until the situation improves.

He said no burning barrels or open fires are allowed. Fires are also not permitted on Finlayson Island.

No burning of any type is permitted for the RM of Battle River especially, which is an area of particular concern due to conditions.
