The Prince Albert Historical Museum is asking for community submissions for an upcoming exhibit entitled “Prince Albert Pandemics Through the Ages.”

“We’re open to anything,” museum educator Joanna Wreakes told paNOW. “Be it a written recollection, images, or if people want to donate or loan us their crafting projects that they took on during COVID.”

So far, they haven’t received any items, but a few people have submitted stories, said Wreakes.

“People have been open about loved ones passing away from COVID and having people that they know who are affected, which makes it really real,” she said.

Artifacts from the past year will be curated with material from the museum’s archives related to past pandemics and epidemics like Spanish Flu, tuberculosis and polio.

“It’s interesting to see how history repeats itself and we’re going through a lot things that people who lived in P.A. 100 years ago also went through in their own way,” said Wreakes.

She noted just after Christmas this year, museum staff came across an edition of the Prince Albert Daily Herald from January 1918, during the Spanish flu.

“There were two article on the front page, one of them saying ‘this many people have died worldwide because of this pandemic’ and then as well there was a call from the Victoria Hospital asking for more support because they were understaffed and their doctors and nurses were overwhelmed,” she said.

The exhibition is set to open May 25. Donations and loaned items will be accepted on a rolling basis.

To submit, call the museum at (306) 764-2992, or email museumeducator@historypa.com
