Saskatchewan Highway 9 through Hudson Bay and Highway 3 near Hudson Bay have made CAA’s 2021 list of the worst roads in the province.

CAA’s 2021 Worst Roads Campaign was held from April 7 to 27 and voting for the worst road took place online.

Potholes and crumbling pavement were the top concerns reported during the campaign.

“The Ministry of Highways is aware of the campaign and the message it brings forward, but it does not affect the priority list for roadworks or construction currently in place,” Minister of Highways Fred Bradshaw said. “When people have concerns about the highways they travel, we listen. Saskatchewan has 26,000 kilometers of provincial highways and we have to set priorities to decide where and when we invest taxpayer’s dollars. This year’s capital budget alone is $520 million and by the end of the 2021 construction year, we expect to have completed 1,350 kilometers of road and highway improvements across the province.”

Highway 9 through Hudson Bay placed third this year and also received the fifth most votes in 2018.

Highway 3 near Hudson Bay finished in a three-way tie for 10th with Highway 35 north of Weyburn and Highway 9 at Canora.

“The ministry will continue to monitor and assess the situations on Highways 3 and 9, among the rest mentioned in the CAA Report that are operated and maintained by the provincial government,” Bradshaw said. “Since 2008, the Saskatchewan government has invested $10.6 billion into provincial roads and highways with plans to continue these levels of record investment.”

CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign did not take place in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
