Battleford’s Mia Sieben has been named the recipient of two prestigious scholarships from the University of Alberta.

A Grade 12 senior at John Paul II Collegiate, Sieben’s entrance marks earned her $6,000 for reaching the University of Alberta’s ‘Gold Standard;’ with $3,000 coming from the U of A in general, and another $3,000 from the College of Education.

In addition, Sieben also received the National Achievement Award for being one of the top out-of-province students entering the U of A this fall. This award will provide her with $30,000 given over four years.

Sieben said she’s grateful for the scholarships and looking forward to advancing to post-secondary at the U of A; adding that she hopes other students can take inspiration from the opportunity she has been given.

“It really feels awesome. And especially to be an out of province student applying to the University of Alberta, it means a lot that they’re really recognizing me,” she said.

“I think it’s nice to see too for other students in North Battleford and JPII that if they work hard, they’re going to get rewarded for it.”

Sieben will be focusing on Secondary Education with a major in French and a minor in English. She said her goal is to one day be able to teach languages.

“Both of my parents have been teachers and I’ve been in the French emersion program for basically the entire time I’ve been in school, so that’s something that’s always been an interest of mine,” she said.

Co-principal at JPII, Tracie Harty said they are very proud of Sieben, not only for the accomplishments, but for her hard work and dedication that lead to the scholarship opportunities.

“Mia is a very diligent student and very serious about her academics and we’re very proud of all of her accomplishments and so excited to hear about what she’s going to do in the future,” Harty said.

“To be recognized for your hard work and dedication throughout your high school years the way Mia has been is something to be very proud of. We’re so proud of Mia and she should be of herself as well.”
