The 6th Annual “On Air for Healthcare” Radiothon is set to hit the airwaves this Friday.

The Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation (BUH), in partnership with 1050 CJNB, Q98, 93.3 The Rock, battlefordsNOW and presenting sponsor, Fisher’s Drug Store, will host the event, running 12 hours from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. on May 14. Like last year, there will be a drive-thru donation process as well as a coin toss, guest speakers and more. The event will take place in the station parking lot at 1711 – 100 Street.

Unlike last year, however, this will be the first time the event was taken fully outdoors. Programming Director Nic Fransoo said the drive-thru process went smoothly last year and they’re anticipating an even better reception.

“So, we’re looking forward to a lot of people driving through and making their donations,” he said.

Fransoo said it’s an important staple for the radio stations each year, as the hospital is a critical part of the community. Because of that access, a number procedures can be done locally instead of in Saskatoon, as well as saving on the extra costs that would ensue.

“Hotel stays, gasoline, food, all that stuff that goes into medical costs,” Fransoo said. “This way, with a local hospital, they don’t exist.”

The fundraising goal is to help replace two 15 year-old anesthetic machines in the Operating Room at BUH that are utilized for surgeries. Claudette McGuire, executive director of the BUH Foundation, said this will achieve new levels of efficiency, such as reporting significant signs and symptoms to allow staff to stay on top of things.

“It’s like looking at a cell phone from the first model to what it is now,” she said. “We feel this is a really good way to advance medical technology within the hospital.”

McGuire said they’ve taken several precautions for the event and will have plenty of entertainment in speakers and the atmosphere for the participants.

“This year is the first time it is outside, so we’re having some fun dressing up as surgeons and nurses,” she said. “And since there’s a drive thru, you don’t even have to get out of your car to donate.”
