The Town of Carrot River has elected their new mayor.

Roman Charko defeated Dylan Borody in the by-election held on Wednesday, May 12 by a vote of 171-127.

“It’s a great honour to receive that phone call,” Charko told northeastNOW. “And the people having the confidence in me doing the job.”

Wednesday’s by-election was held as former Mayor Dennis Letendre stepped down earlier this year after being elected in November. Charko said he hopes to bring some stability to the mayor’s chair, something he thinks the citizens are looking for.

“We’ve had a few by-elections in town, that’s a concern of the citizens,” he said. “There’s been some staff changes, that’s a concern to the citizens.”

Charko said it’s a great time to come together with the other elected officials and help move Carrot River forward.

“There’s lots of important things,” Charko said. “Schools, the rink, curling rink, businesses on Main Street, they’re all important and the businesses surrounding the community are very important.”

Charko has spent a total 20 years in politics, serving as a councilor on the RM of Moose Range.

Borody, who was acting mayor after Lentendre stepped down, will retain his seat on council.
