Lloyd Ex receives funding for technology upgrade

May 15, 2021 | 12:00 PM

When events return to the Lloydminster Exhibition Association (Lloyd Ex), Lloydminster residents will likely notice massive technology upgrades.

Last week, the federal and provincial governments granted Lloyd Ex $114,673 and $95,551 respectively to overhaul communication and safety technology used at the facility. Assistant General Manager Jackie Tomayer said they were thrilled with the news.

“When we are able to open back up, we’re going to be retrofitted with a bunch of technology that will help our guests, even more, have a great experience here at Lloyd Ex.,” she said.

The upgrades will improve internet quality, something Lloyd Ex has already begun to address in recent years. Tomayer said this will result in enhanced infrastructure for networking capabilities throughout the building.

“So, our guests and renters will have more options as far as technology goes, throughout our facilities,” she said.

The upgrade is also going to bump up security throughout the premises. Lloyd Ex. Is providing an additional $76,459 to complete the project. Thanks to dollars earmarked for purchasing land earlier last year, Tomayer said they won’t have to raise any funding.

“Because the Alberta government secured that for us, we were able to divert some funds from our Chase the Ace program and will be able to help with these enhancements,” she said. “So, we can get the most bang for our buck.”

Mayor Gerald Aalbers said he and council are very excited for the association, which has been hit hard during the pandemic. Given the facility serves urban and rural needs and isn’t current;y busy, the timing of the announcement is huge.

When you are not as busy and you can put your full attention to something, that will give the staff really direct their energy and put it to good use,” Aalbers said.

He added that the security improvements are also very encouraging, in order to entice both guests and vendors.

“It adds to the value of the facility and makes people feel more reassured that their safety and protection is even more properly secured.”

Work on the upgrades Is expected to begin soon.
