P.A. Raiders begin presenting year-end awards

As is tradition, the Prince Albert Raiders are officially marking the end of their hockey season with the year-end awards.

They’re being done virtually for the second year in a row due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The first two awards were handed out Monday and will continue throughout the week.

Winner of the Dave Balon Award for Leading Scorer was Ozzy Wiesblatt. He led the team in scoring with 28 points (seven goals, 21 assists) in 23 games.

The San Jose Sharks prospect finished his third season in the WHL. In 152 games with the Raiders, Wiesblatt has 48 goals and 138 points.

The Three Stars Award went to Max Paddock. He played in 15 games this season in the Subway Hub Centre, posting a 7-6-1-0 record. He had a 2.87 goals-against average and a 0.903 save percentage to go along with two shutouts.

This season’s Three Stars were:

  • First Star – Max Paddock
  • Second Star – Ozzy Wiesblatt
  • Third Star – Justin Nachbaur

The winner of the Lionel Diehl Memorial Award as Hardest Working Player was Reece Vitelli.

Vitelli dressed in all 24 games for the Raiders in the Subway Hub Centre and finished second in team scoring with 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists). The Winnipeg, Man. product was also one of the best in the faceoff circle in the Hub, winning 61 per cent of his draws.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Raiders announced Remy Aquilon as the Most Improved Player. The Ches Leach Award winner set a career high in assists (15) and points (16) during the 24 games this season. He was also a career-best plus-seven while playing on the top defensive pair for the duration of the season.

The Kelowna, B.C. product has suited up in 145 career games in the WHL, with 88 of those coming with the Raiders. He has a pair of goals and 24 assists over parts of four seasons in the WHL.

The Raiders finished the 2020-21 season in fourth place in the East Division with 22 points.

More awards will be handed out throughout the week.
