Battlefords Minor Baseball expected to begin games next week

Blue skies and baseball tend to go hand-in-hand, so it only makes sense that both are expected to come together next week in the Battlefords.

The Battlefords Minor Baseball Association (BMBI) is set to begin playing games as early as next week, following Tuesday’s announcement from the province that outdoor sports will be able to start game-play as part of Step One of Saskatchewan’s Re-Open Roadmap, which takes effect May 30.

“Just listening at the executive meeting, I believe there will be a few games and a few diamonds being used for more than just practice starting next week,” BMBI President, Clinton Gieni said. “Probably the earliest games would be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and then into the weekend, with maybe a couple on the weekend as well.”

Gieni said it will be great to see games return to the community, as the reason children and youth sign up each year is for the chance to play the game.

“Kids and coaches can only practice so long before the enthusiasm goes out of that exercise a bit, so I think a lot of the players, the coaches, and even the parents will be a lot more enthusiast here going forward,” he said. “There should be a good amount of activity going on with ball come the month of June, both on evenings and weekends as well.”

Due to all the uncertainties earlier this year surrounding the potential to play games this season, registration for minor baseball in the community was down about 50 percent from what it normally is, this spring.

However, after seeing a full turnout at their winter camp prior to the season, and a resumption of games to come, Gieni said they are expecting a big bounce back next year.

“We’re probably looking at next year being the highest registrants we’ve ever had for baseball, depending on how this season goes,” he said. “I know there are a lot of individuals who have expressed interest in playing ball now [following the announcement], but our registration dates have closed.

Gieni said as much as they’d like to see everyone get to play, they cannot simply reopen the registration window as teams were determined weeks ago and have been practicing for nearly a month’s time already.

“You get to a point where you have to close off registration because you have to organize your teams and your coaches and then they need time to prepare too, so you can’t just keep adding people to your rosters,” he said.

“In a lot of cases, you need the adults stepping forward and prepared to coach, too. So at some point, you have to say okay, this is what our year’s going to look like and you move to the next step. But we look forward to having everyone sign up next year.”

For those still interested in getting involved with Battlefords Minor Baseball this season, the association is still looking for older/experienced umpires and officials for the spring season.
