Inmate’s death not believed to be COVID related: Correctional Service Canada

While the circumstances surrounding the death of a Saskatchewan Penitentiary inmate remains part of an active investigation, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is providing a few more details.

Leonard Montgrand was 51 when he died on May 28.

“Leonard Montgrand appears to have died from natural causes. CSC does not believe his death is linked to COVID-19; however, this incident is still under investigation and the Coroner will determine the cause of death,” the CSC said.

The CSC previously indicated Montgrand was serving a one-year and six-month sentence for Aggravated Assault at the time of this death. However, a further query by paNOW confirmed the offence occurred while he was on a Long Term Supervision Order (LTSO) at the prison.

This essentially means Montgrand would have been in custody on a more serious matter, when the offence occurred last year.

“When an offender is supervised under an LTSO, they are under the jurisdiction of the Correctional Service Canada, and as such, any charges that are incurred during that time also fall under federal jurisdiction,” the CSC said.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy also requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

“We take the death of an inmate very seriously. The loss of a life is a tragedy at any time,” the CSC said.
